Résumé

L’objectif de cet article est de montrer que l’enseignement d’un concept statistique peut dépasser largement les caractéristiques mathématiques de sa définition en attirant l’attention des élèves sur les conditions de son utilisation, sa raison d’être et son impact sur notre société que son histoire révèle. Cette histoire devient alors un formidable outil pédagogique. Nous tenterons de le prouver en considérant la moyenne arithmétique.

Facilitate the teaching of the arithmetic mean by means of its history

The objective of this article is to show that the teaching of a statistical concept can overtake the mathematical characteristics of its definition by drawing the attention of the pupils on the conditions of its use and its impact on our society revealed by its history. This history becomes then an efficient educational tool. We will try to illustrate this fact by considering the arithmetic mean.
